What is a MRI scan?

A magnetic resonance (MRI) scan is a way of creating pictures of your body using magnets and radiowaves. X-rays are not used during an MRI scan.

There are no known risks or side effects associated with MRI. However, because of the magnets involved, MRI must not be performed on people with certain metal implants in their bodies such as:

  • Pacemakers
  • Inner ear implants
  • Surgical clips within the head
  • Some artificial metallic heart valves
  • .
If you have ever had metal fragments in your eyes due to an injury, it will be necessary for you to have an x-ray of your eyes to ensure that no fragments still remain. In most cases there is no special preparation for MRI scans, however you will be asked to complete a safety questionnaire prior to your scan.

If on admission, it is necessary for you to have an MRI scan, a Radiographer will explain the examination to you and answer any queries you may have.
