Summary of Services Provided

IDS Ltd run a daily Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinic from our premises on the grounds of Cappagh Hospital.
A wide range of clients of all age groups are routinely referred to our clinics.
All our clients are individuals with unique aspirations, expectations and requirements and the Prosthetic and Orthotic services and devices provided by IDS are intended to optimise, meet or exceed these.
The IDS Prosthetists and Orthotists are trained to select the most appropriate devices, materials and components in terms of function, ease of use, appearance, cost benefit and reliability.
Prosthetic service or rehabilitation deals with the process of prescribing, manufacturing and fitting a prosthetic limb. Re-educating gait and other functions are also vital parts of this process. A prosthesis is an artificial limb that compensates for an absent or amputated limb segment, for example a hand, or a leg. Sometimes multiple limbs are needed for the person missing more than one limb.
Orthoses are biomechanical devices intended to support, correct or replace natural function and can be both stock items and custom made to suit the requirements of one specific individual.
Specialist/Orthopaedic/Customised footwear is intended to provide an improved level of fit and function which is not available from other sources. It is intended to provide a number of functions, for example:
- Accommodation of foot shape and size.
- Protection for ‘At Risk’ feet, for example feet prone to ulceration due to vascular decease.
- Correction for unstable feet and ankles.
Along with our daily Prosthetic/Orthotic service, IDS senior clinical staff are also involved in the following clinics which are run in conjunction with Cappagh Hospital.
Foot clinic : A weekly consultant led surgery clinic attended by a senior IDS Orthotist is run in Cappagh Hospital to explore the potential of orthotic intervention should surgery not be an option.
Upper limb combined clinic : This clinic is held quarterly in conjunction with plastic surgeons from Temple St. and St James Hospital, upper limb Orthopedic specialist from Cappagh Hospital and a senior Prosthetist from IDS catering for patients with congenital upper limb deformities.
Limb lengthening clinic : This clinic is held monthly led by the Orthopedic consultant from Cappagh Hospital and a senior Clinician from IDS and caters for patients with congenital limb deficiencies.
Tumour Prosthetic Team : Together with other Health Care Professionals we work closely to support the needs of those undergoing amputation or other surgery following complications subsequent to cancer.
Orthotic and Prosthetic Services
IDS Ltd has been serving Cappagh Hospital and its clients as a specialist Prosthetics, Orthotics and Footwear provider since 1990 and is located on the Hospital grounds. We are one of the major suppliers of orthotic and prosthetic services and devices in the country.
These services are available to private and publicly funded clients, with all initial assessments being free of charge. Privately funded clients may not need a formal referral from a health care professional and can contact IDS directly for assessment, the IDS staff will advise at the time of initial assessment if a formal referral from a health care professional is required. For those clients expecting to be funded by the HSE a referral from a health care professional will be required.
In addition to our daily Cappagh Prosthetic and Orthotic clinic, we have an additional 13 satellite clinics around the country, which you may find more convenient to attend if you reside outside Dublin.
Today IDS is part of the world wide Otto Bock Healthcare Group of companies. Our direct link with Otto Bock not only aids us in our mission to be at the forefront of new methods of treatment and products, but it also gives us a significant resource should there be a need to avail of further expertise. IDS provides educational training to students studying Prosthetics and Orthotics at the Universities of Strathclyde (Glasgow) and Salford (Manchester), as well as education and assistance to allied Health Care Professionals.
