The Laboratory

 

Under the terms of the EU Blood/Tissue Directive, Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital is a designated Blood and Tissue Establishment and is licensed by the Irish Medicines Board.  

Summary of Services Provided

The Laboratory is divided into four sections as follows:Laboratory

  • Biochemistry:Diagnostic Clinical Biochemistry uses biochemical knowledge and techniques to assist in the diagnosis of human disease, to follow its progress and to monitor the effect of treatment. 
  • Blood Transfusion:This specialty covers the investigations required to ensure compatibility with donor blood products when required for transfusion.   Such investigations include Blood Grouping and Irregular Antibody identification and screening and cross-matching of donor blood with patient’s blood samples.
  • Haematology:This specialty deals with disorders of blood, blood cells and the bone marrow.  There is a consultative service for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of Haematology and coagulation disorders and an oral anti-coagulant monitoring service.
  • Microbiology:This specialty deals with the investigation of infection and infectious diseases caused by pathogens.  These pathogens could be bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.  It provides a consultative service for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of infectious diseases, an anti-microbial usage and monitoring service, and control of the use of antibiotics.  It also provides environmental monitoring for Theatre, Autotransfusion and Blood Transfusion and bacterial testing for the Bone Bank. 

Hours of service

Monday – Friday: 9.00am – 5.00pm
There is a limited emergency on call service available for Biochemistry, Blood Transfusion and Haematology outside of these hours.
